What is POP?

Persistent organic pollutants are mostly man-made chemicals, that are resistant to environmental degradation. These organic compounds are known to accumulate in human and animal tissues, and therefore could have adverse effects on human health.

Chemicals on the original POP’s list

In May 1995, the UNEP Governing Council had identified twelve categories: Aldrin, Chlordane, DDT, Mirex, Dieldrin, Toxaphene, Endrin, Heptachlor, Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), Hexachlorobenzene, Dioxin, Furans.
